Kapahaka
Kapahaka has been around for
many years at Papakura
Normal School. It is a
cultural experience that a lot of people attend and enjoy. It includes having lots
of fun and learning exciting new things.
We learn how to use and how
to hold things like the poi, taiaha and the tete toria. We also learn what they
were used for in the past. The poi was used to strengthen your wrist for
jobs that took a long time and required strong arms.
Kapahaka takes a lot of
practice and experience. You don't always get everything right the
first time, but with a lot of hard work and practise you learn. With the help
of the Kapahaka teachers you will learn to master the skills even faster.
Kapahaka is usually performed
at the end of a term and at the end of the year. We don't perform the same
Kapahaka routine twice. before we perform our Kapahaka routine, we always do a
karakia to give us good luck and make sure we don't muck up on stage.
