What we're doing at Papakura Normal School

In term two Mrs Williams the environmental teacher of Papakura Normal School asked interested children if they would like to be a part of the environmental team for 2004.

Then we started discussing what the environmental problems were around the school.

They  were:

-We had native trees but they weren't attracting native birds.

-We had nowhere for classrooms to plant fruit and vegetables.

-We had no areas to study nature.

The Environmental group went and looked at the area beside the pool then we started designing as a group, what the area should look like after it was completed.

One thing that we designed were the paving slabs. These were to be decorated with pebbles in a certain pattern. Then they were laid down in a path and then the paving slabs were surrounded with shells creating a path.

Another thing designed was the hexagonal seat. The middle of the hexagonal seat was filled with soil and lavender was planted.

We also laid down cardboard down around our trees and poured mulch on the cardboard surrounding the path.

We designed raised planters and got these built.  Now we are ready to start planting.
