Sunset Beach
Waking up to the clanging of bells was not cool; it was the second day at camp. I was used to waking up this early though. Miss Wilson woke us up on this particular morning. It was a new day and I was excited. We were going to the beach.
I sat at the dining table enjoying my meal, and chatting away with my friends. It was delicious, and I was enjoying it. Breakfast was warm inside my stomach. After breakfast, we were told that we had to go back to our dorms and prepare for our day at Sunset Beach. Everyone came back with their gear, put it onto the trailer, and we were finally ready to head off to Sunset Beach.
On the way, Monika and I started talking, going on and on about what we would do at the beach. When we arrived, we were split up into our groups, and assembled at the life saving club. There we met two lifeguards, Travis and Sam. They talked to us about a lot of important things to remember and take care with when we are at a beach. We were told what types of waves there were, what kind of equipment they used and what they needed it for, also how to recognize a rip and how to get ourselves out of a rip. After all the important things were discussed, we went out onto the beach for a game.
My toes dug into the deep, soft, black, sand; the sand was wet and cold, though the breeze was warm on my back. I heard a whistle blow and everyone immediately started lining up. Before we started, Mr. Hodge had to move a dead corpse off the beach in case anyone stood on it or eat it. It looked disgusting. Our first game was exciting - we played seaweed. It was difficult to run on sand and I had to push my toes into the thick sand so I could move forward. Everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves as I could hear laughing and shouting around me. After a few games of seaweed we moved on to our next activity where we were about to get wet.
The water was numbingly cold, so I avoided getting too wet, and I really didn’t want to get wet above my waist. My legs were going numb, like I had pins and needles all over my legs. Goosebumps were appearing all over my body. I forced myself to get a grip and dive into the icy water for my team. I held my breath and dived in and under with my eyes squeezed tightly shut. I got out quickly and ran to my team. It was freezing! I wasn’t looking forward to getting in again.
After the beach activities, I got changed and slowly walked back to camp feeling really hungry. We moved slowly and Genny and I were right at the back.
Arriving back at camp was bliss. I dumped myself on my bed and threw my shoes off. I was so tired. I changed shoes and socks and went to the next rotation with my team. After completing the confidence course, we went to have diner.
In the dining hall I sat with Reenal, Koyal, and Nikita. We talked about our day. We finished eating and went back to our dorms.
After our last rotation, we wrote up our reflections and watched the slide show, and listened to Mr. Hodge tell us a “supposedly” scary story. Some people got scared while some of the more macho boys pretended to be tough.
After that everyone cleaned their teeth and went off to bed. I tried to get to sleep as quickly as possible so I wouldn’t be tired the following morning.
I went to sleep wondering what exciting and exhilarating things were going to happen the next day.
