Year 8 Camp

Camp Here I come …

My exciting day had finally come - Monday morning - the day we were leaving for CAMP!

I had to get ready. I got up and prepared to start my day of excitement and new experiences. When I was ready I loaded my bags in the car and my dad and I left home.

We arrived at school, parked on the field ,went into the hall and saw people waiting .We waited a while for everyone else to come and load their bags into the truck. Before anyone could leave school, everyone had to line up in their transport lines. I was really anxious to get going.  My car finally left and we were on our way to camp.

It took us a while to get to the camp. We finally arrived and I was over the moon.

The bags were all unloaded inside the front gate. Some people had a lot of luggage. It was as if they were going away for a month. When the luggage was unloaded we lined up on the grass in our team lines where we were given instructions on what we had to do.

After our instructions we retrieved our bags and went to our dorms. We found the beds we would like to use. I went right down to the second to last bed at the end and put my sheet on, then all the other stuff that I needed to use.

Now we are going up and up a steep track I am thinking, “How long is this going to take?”

I am pulling on a rope, up a part of the hill that is extremely steep. I need to use the rope because there is loose dirt. We’re on the hardest part of the tramp. I am experiencing loose dirt, a fear of slipping backwards, and on the positive side, the beautiful views. At one point we can see the Sky Tower and it is amazing that we can see it from so far away. We are also finding out about Port Waikato - its history and other details. We eat lunch at the top while enjoying the views, then make our way downhill and back to camp. It has been a rewarding experience.

We are finally back at camp where we begin our first activity rotation. My group is on the low ropes course .It is challenging but also a lot of fun. My favorite parts are balancing and swinging from tyre to tyre, and walking along the single rope.

After our activities we eat a delicious meal of spaghetti  Bolognese served with some green salad. Dessert consists of mouth-watering ice cream, chocolate sauce and wafers. The meal is really nice.

After dinner we do our second activity. We have archery. Now this is really really fun, especially when I hit the blue part of the target. The funniest part is when I have to climb over the fence and get my arrow which has landed in the long grass on the hill. I get better with each turn.
