Kayaking
Yummy! Breakfast time! We are having spaghetti on toast.
“Mmmmmm!” I’m saying as I lick my lips.
Breakfast is delicious and very filling. My stomach grumbles in appreciation.
After breakfast we had to go back to our dorms and prepare for kayaking. I went to my bag, got my togs out, and put them on. I had to get dressed in front of the other girls because there was no time to race to the toilets to get dressed.
Waiting at the gate for our transport to where the kayaking was taking place was frustrating. I just wanted to get going.
Once we got there we took off our tops and other clothing that we weren’t swimming in. When we had done that we went over to the truck and got a life jacket, we tightened them and made sure they were the right ones for us and were safe for us to use.
We walked over to the sand and picked up the paddles. John taught us the right way to handle them. We got into the water and practised how to get in and out of the kayaks properly.
It was time to paddle out in the kayaks. As I got into one of them it tilted to the side and I just about fell. I was pretty embarrassed although I laughed to cover it up. Actually, I did fall out at one stage. We then paddled to the other side of the bay and once we arrived there, we got out of the kayaks and organised ourselves into pairs. I was with Courtney as usual.
We then got into the kayaks again, all squashed and sore. We started paddling our kayak around and around until, at one stage, we tipped out and went under the water. It is the first time in my life that I have felt so terrified. I thought we were going to drown. Once we stopped panicking we were able to stand up and tip the canoe back to the right position and off we went again.
We paddled back to where we had started and dragged the kayaks back up to the sand. We went to the van, got our towels and dried out just a bit. We jumped in the van and off we went back to camp. I thought it was a great day. I was pleased with my achievements.
