First day at camp
When we arrived at camp we collected our bags, went straight to our dorms and chose which bed we wanted to sleep in. We then made our beds and prepared for the tramp.
We went group by group. The first three groups left half an hour ahead of the following three groups. I was in one of the first three groups. We started walking and it didn’t take long before everyone became tired. My dad and I were not puffed like the others because we are both fit. I stayed next to my dad who was at the back of the line with Miss Wilson helping anyone who needed it. We caught up to the first groups so we stopped to have a 5 minute break to let them get ahead. We continued walking and reached the top of the bush. It was a beautiful place from which to look out and see the Waikato River going into the sea. We saw all of this while we ate our lunch.
After lunch we headed downhill back to camp. About half way there Mr Hodge stopped to tell us a story about a special Waikato sheep, which has two short legs and two long legs. It was a good non fictional story. I am still trying to decide whether it is true or not.
Our next stop was the park where we got to play, have an ice block and have photos taken. In the afternoon we prepared for our camp activities. By late afternoon we were tired. We all went back to our dorms and had showers, and put clean clothes and shoes on. We then waited for the bell to let us know it was time to line up for dinner.
We ate dinner in mixed groups that we chose ourselves. We had to wait until we were called up to the serving area before we got our dinner served to us. I really enjoyed the dinner. When everyone had finished their first serving of dinner, we were able to have seconds if we could fit it in, or just have pudding (I had both).
Following dinner, it was time for our second activity followed by us returning to the dining room to write our daily reflections. We then watched the photos that had been taken that day and listened to stories of the day’s activities. This was followed by parents awarding certificates.
The lights in the dining hall were turned off so Mr Hodge could tell us some spooky stories. They really were scary for some people as I could see them crying when the lights were turned back on.
Finally it was time for bed. I had fun running around in the dorm and talking when I shouldn’t have been.
