 Orienteering

Wednesday the 31st of March - orienteering day had finally come. I needed to be very successful because I was hoping to make it into the school orienteering team. Since we weren’t going till 11 o’clock we had time to spare. After some scrumptious breakfast we strode across the road to the trampoline. We had a flipping completion which I won. Then Shaun, a.k.a “Acne Man”, came and did a double forward flip. I congratulated him and then did one myself. I was very proud of myself.

Everyone was called back to prepare for orienteering. I hastily filled my water bottle, and waited in the dorm with the boys. Five minutes later we were in the dining hall getting briefed about the course. We were driven to the course by parents and teachers. We passed giant slabs of limestone and strange looking trees. At the course we were given a compass so we wouldn’t get lost. I was starting last which I was very pleased about.

I started off by sprinting quickly to the first control, clipping it, and then jogging further up the hill. Although the pain in my legs was excruciating, I carried on running, clipping control after control. I felt I was doing quite well. I had overtaken Courtney and was gaining on Robert and Shaun. I galloped down the hill, passing people, and leapt over sludge like I wings and passed more people. I saw the finish line and pushed myself to the limit. I had finished.

My body was an aching mess and I was exhausted. My shoes were covered in putrid mud and so were my legs. I saw my time and was very impressed. I had 22 minutes taken off my time so it ended up being 18 minutes and 30 seconds.

I had beaten everybody and broken our school record. That time, and my performance,  thankfully got me a spot in the orienteering team.
