concerning hygiene by the Principal / Deputy Principal at SCHOOL ASSEMBLY'
- Daily hygiene
discussion by Teachers in class.
- In the event of a
Yellow Alert - at appropriate class levels, a daily Class Monitor is
selected to observe and help other students in class with the school
hygiene programme. The monitor
should report any concerns or problems to the teacher.
- At weekly staff
meetings concerns shared with all staff. Principal to note concerns, with
immediate follow up action or intervention, where necessary.

issues unable to be resolved in class shall be reported to the Principal,
direct, for immediate action.
- In the event of
sickness in any area of the school perceived to be unusual or outside the
norm (either student or adult) shall be isolated as far as possible with
immediate medical assistance sought.
- The Sick Bay should not be used for
suspected serious illness issues. A separate area set up for the purpose
of isolation should be found within the school.
- For suspected
serious illness, either in students or staff, protective safety glasses,
masks, gloves should be used al all times as a matter of course by the
carer. A suitable face mask should be worn by the sick to help reduce the
risk to others by coughing or sneezing.
- Liquid hand soap,
hot water and paper disposable towels should be available and used at all
times throughout the school i.e. toilet areas, staffroom or other.
- Tissues along with
an appropriate disposable container should be available in each classroom,
staffroom, administration area, hall, gymnasium or other area where people
gather.
- Since the H5N 1
virus can survive for a period of time on surfaces touched by a person
with the virus. A suitable disinfectant should be used with disposable
wipes to clean all surfaces on a daily basis.
- If individual
student cleanliness is a problem, a Principal/Teacher should use a
considered diplomatic approach where necessary, either with the student or
parent to avoid embarrassment, to solve the problem.
- Soiled clothing
should be either disposed of immediately using disposable gloves or placed
in a sealable plastic bag to be disposed of by the parent or caregiver.
- Principal to promulgate the
school hygiene programme to parents via school newsletter and where
possible by direct contact and involvement.
- A school hygiene group should
be formed involving the Principal, a Teacher,' a Parent or other. A
minimum of three is recommended to ensure this hygiene programme is
rigorously followed through.
Effort now will generate best
possible outcomes when it is needed most.
