SCHOOL HYGIENE PROGRAMME AND GENERAL METHODOLOGY

  1. Ongoing comment concerning hygiene by the Principal / Deputy Principal at SCHOOL ASSEMBLY'
  1. Daily hygiene discussion by Teachers in class.
  1. In the event of a Yellow Alert - at appropriate class levels, a daily Class Monitor is selected to observe and help other students in class with the school hygiene programme.  The monitor should report any concerns or problems to the teacher.
  1. At weekly staff meetings concerns shared with all staff. Principal to note concerns, with immediate follow up action or intervention, where necessary.
  1. Serious hygiene issues unable to be resolved in class shall be reported to the Principal, direct, for immediate action.
  1. In the event of sickness in any area of the school perceived to be unusual or outside the norm (either student or adult) shall be isolated as far as possible with immediate medical assistance sought.
  1. The Sick Bay should not be used for suspected serious illness issues. A separate area set up for the purpose of isolation should be found within the school.
  1. For suspected serious illness, either in students or staff, protective safety glasses, masks, gloves should be used al all times as a matter of course by the carer. A suitable face mask should be worn by the sick to help reduce the risk to others by coughing or sneezing.
  1. Liquid hand soap, hot water and paper disposable towels should be available and used at all times throughout the school i.e. toilet areas, staffroom or other.
  1. Tissues along with an appropriate disposable container should be available in each classroom, staffroom, administration area, hall, gymnasium or other area where people gather.
  1. Since the H5N 1 virus can survive for a period of time on surfaces touched by a person with the virus. A suitable disinfectant should be used with disposable wipes to clean all surfaces on a daily basis.
  1. If individual student cleanliness is a problem, a Principal/Teacher should use a considered diplomatic approach where necessary, either with the student or parent to avoid embarrassment, to solve the problem.
  1. Soiled clothing should be either disposed of immediately using disposable gloves or placed in a sealable plastic bag to be disposed of by the parent or caregiver.
  1. Principal to promulgate the school hygiene programme to parents via school newsletter and where possible by direct contact and involvement.
  2. A school hygiene group should be formed involving the Principal, a Teacher,' a Parent or other. A minimum of three is recommended to ensure this hygiene programme is rigorously followed through.

Effort now will generate best possible outcomes when it is needed most.
