Influenza Pandemic

INFLUENZA PANDEMIC POLICY

Rationale

The World Health Organisation has warned that there is a high risk of the avian influenza ("bird flu") becoming the next human influenza pandemic. The Ministry of Health (MoH) is constantly updating its pandemic influenza plan and leading whole of government work to prepare for a possible pandemic in New Zealand. All educational institutions must prepare in advance for the possibility of a pandemic.

Purposes

  1. To ensure that the school has a workable plan in the event that the Ministry of Health activates Yellow or Red Alerts.
  1. To encourage everyday practices to limit the spread of viruses and infection.
  1. To establish a team to oversee the schools response in the event of a Pandemic.

Guidelines

The Principal shall:

  1. Establish a team to develop and maintain an action plan and guidelines for any possible pandemic.
  1. Ensure that a pandemic action plan and guidelines are established that reflect the Ministry of Education's Influenza Pandemic Planning Guide for Schools.
  1. Appoint a Pandemic Response Leader who shall be the School's liaison officer with outside authorities in the event of a pandemic.
  1. Ensure that the teaching of basic hygiene practices that limit the spread of viruses and infections take place within the school's health programme.
