HOMEWORK GUIDELINES

Year 7 - 8

There is an expectation that homework will be regular and self managing. Homework will include weekly curriculum based activities (usually literacy / numeracy) relevant to current learning. Additionally, a range of other activities with an element of choice will be completed to encourage the development of the Key Competencies and transferable skills – these modules being completed throughout the term at a variable rate depending on each child's abilities and needs.

There is an expectation that homework will take approx three hours per week. Homework should enable active children to link and acknowledge their extra-curricular activities e.g. modules including a credit for learning during sports coaching / cooking a meal. Evaluation of such modules will be done with the inclusion of parents, teachers and students.

Year 3 – 6

There is an expectation that homework will be regular and purposeful.  Homework will be relevant to the current classroom programme and will cater for children's needs and abilities.  The major focus will be literacy and numeracy.  Children will participate in, and select from, a range of other activities and skills to support learning.

Homework will be valued and include feedback for the children from the teachers, peers and parents.  There is an expectation that homework will take approximately 1 ½ hours for Year 3 / 4 children and two hours for Year 5 / 6 children per week.

Year 1 – 2

Home learning in Year 1 and 2 will be a positive, interactive experience for all involved.  It must have a purpose that is clearly understood by students, parents and the teacher, and be related to the current needs of the students.

Feedback between home and school (parent, teacher and child) is an essential component for developing home learning and a successful home/school partnership.

Home learning will be composed of nightly reading of a school reading book(s).  This may involve letter / sound / word practice or a simple activity.  As the children progress other activities may be provided to extend or consolidate learning in other curriculum areas, particularly mathematics.

Homework for Years 0 / 1 should not exceed 10 to 15 minutes and for Year 2 children 15 to 20 minutes.
