Trusteeship: did you know?

Here are some facts about the country’s trustees to ponder as we head into another election. Three cheers for your good work!

·         Approx. 15,000 trustees are elected to school boards by parent communities
every three years.

·         Trustees are responsible for developing a school’s policy framework, strategic plan and making tough decisions on sometimes complex operational and educational issues, which can impact on an entire community.

·         More than 2,460 school boards are accountable for the education of more than 760,000 primary and secondary students.

·         The country’s trustees are responsible for spending $1.2 billion per year on the day-to-day running of schools and another $400-$500 million per year in property development and maintenance.

·         More than 100,000 trustees have served on boards over the past 20 years.

·         Recent survey findings show that approx. 93 per cent of trustees describe their experience as a board member as very positive or quite positive, with 92 per cent believing their time on the board has resulted in personal growth.
